Sines is located exactly on Portugal’s southwest coast, inserted in the Natural Park of Sudoeste Alentejo e Costa Vicentina, favoring the beautiful beaches and warm climate characteristic of this region. A fishing center with excellent fresh fish and shellfish, that coupled with the typical delicacies of Alentejo’s coast make this a master place in rich gastronomy. The unspoiled beaches that lie along this coast, make a magnificent landscaped setting that is complete with the wonderful flora and fauna of the Natural Park of Sudoeste Alentejo e Costa Vicentina. From the city bay, at south you can admire on one side an important haven for local fishermen, and on the other the essential marina to support the sailboats crossing the Alentejo sea.  At north enjoy the Sines Castle, from distant medieval origins, and the statue of Vasco da Gama, where it is believed to have been born the important Portuguese explorer.

The story of Sines is sculpted by the sea and by its resources that had a main role in defining the economy, culture, composition and character of the people of this place, from pre-history to the present day. Evidences found in Sines proves the existence of human occupation in this area since prehistoric times, traces that are today revealed at the municipality archaeological sites. During the Roman occupation the town is for the first time a port and industrial center. The strong growth of Sines, visible over the years, was mainly due to the importance of the existing port-industrial complex as well as the region’s extensive tourist offer.

Walking or horse riding through the extensive beaches at the north of the city, a jeep tour or riding a bike to get to know the pristine beaches of the south, a boat ride to the charming Pessegueiro Island, are some of the exciting activities you can do outdoors to discover this beautiful region. The magnificent beaches in total harmony with Sines’ historical heritage make this town a magnificent tourist point of reference for visitors from around the world.
